Something no dog owner should be without. Great for training, or can double as a purse or fanny pack! Made by hand in Indiana, USA - this sturdy quilted treat pouch loaded with details. Under the magnetically closing flap is a nice big space for all your doggie goodies, and a separate zippered outer pocket for your keys, cell phone, etc. Each has it's own handmade clay medallion (embossed with a pawprint and heart) sewn to the flap; no two are alike - so each pouch is an original. The treat compartment is fully lined with soft, moisture resistant material, so if you need to use bits of cooked meat or cheese, etc to accomplish your training goals, feel free - as this pouch is fully washable. Measures 6" tall x 7" wide, adjustable waistband goes from 28" - 48".

The perfect little carrier for all your "positive reinforcements". It's made of buttery soft black leather, the front flap is embossed with a galloping horse logo. It's got a separate zippered compartment in the back for your "goodies", your horse's "goodies" can be accessed immediately by flipping up the magnetically secured flap on the front pouch. Clicker training (all positive reinforcement training, actually) is most successful when the reward is given immediately after the desired behavior - this pouch is a great helper for having treats readily available.

It's fully lined, so soggy things like carrots don't transfer dampness through to the wearer. And it cleans up nicely too. I have been using the same pouch for years - and it still looks great. (Even though I have been guilty of leaving a few forgotten carrots in mine a time or two.)

It has an adjustable web belt with quick clip fastener - adjusts from 34" to 42" - fits all sizes - over a heavy coat if need be! The pouch portion is 6" wide x 7" tall - holds a generous amount of treats - about right for a successful training session!

Once you get past the notion that Lorenzo on the cover looks just like Jerry Seinfeld in the Puffy Shirt episode (more pictures here), you can get down to business enjoying the photos and text chronicling his remarkable life with horses. Just the section of the book that tells about his acquisition of the six grey horses shown on the cover is worth the price of the whole book; He went to Portugal and purchased a mob of unhandled 2-year-old fillies. Descriptive terms used are "wild and unruly", "real little devils", "wild as a pack of young wolves". As you can see, the transformation is remarkable. Throughout this book you will follow Lorenzo through his childhood, through the development of his training methods, and finally as a renowned performer. And yes, he does occasionally fall off and get hurt. The book talks candidly about that, too. It's a wonderful addition to any equine library.

Gina's note: I thought I'd read every horse story in existence, and knew of every "famous" horse in history. But the story of Jim Key was almost not told - ever - until Tennessee native and author Mim Eichler Rivas found herself in the middle of a mystery. That surrounding the nearly lost story of a horse who could read, write, do math and his owner; former slave, Civil War veteran, self-taught veterinarian Dr William Key. This well-written and extensively researched true story is one of the best I have ever read. After I found myself at a horse expo, enthusiastically praising this book to a total stranger, in a booth belonging to a vendor I didn't even know... Ultimate Guide to Pampering Your Horse

This great little book has been around forever.

I must admit, the title was a bit off-putting to me. My horses have it made. They live a life of near total leisure, the best food, farrier & veterinary care, etc, etc. If I read this book... then I might discover more things that I was NOT doing for my already-pampered equines. Then I would have to feel guilty LOL.

I was pleasantly surprised. There, interspersed among the goofy BIRTHDAY PARTY IDEAS, and the HOMEMADE HORSE TREAT RECIPES, were practical, useful tips and hints that could be implemented by the average busy horse owner. When my husband was a farrier, he was always noticing clever solutions problems and nifty ways of doing things in the different barns. Things like keeping a toilet brush in the barn to scrub water buckets... (and all those years I'd been skinning my knuckles using a regular scrub brush... duh!)

So this ended up being a fun little book chock-full of silly AND useful information. The perfect gift for yourself, or that horsey person who ALREADY pampers their horse!

Using the Mysteries of Autism to Decode Animal Behavior

This is one of the most fascinating books I have ever read. In writing this copy - to tell you all about it - I referenced the publisher's promotional notes - and discovered them to be very specific, but a little dry and uninviting: "Applies the autism theory of "hyper-specificity" to animals, showing that animals and autistic people are so sensitive to detail that they "can't see the forest for the trees". "Explores the "interpreter" in the normal human brain that filters out detail, leaving people blind to much of the reality that surrounds them - a reality that animals and autistic people see, sometimes all too clearly...."

The reality is, that Temple Grandin is an amazing person, and this book is an amazing work. She went from being a child that doctors urged her parents to institutionalize - to a PhD, author, college professor, and lecturer. She was advisor to the film-makers for the movie "Rain Man" - which was acclaimed for it's humorous, and very accurate portrayal of the relationship between an autistic man and his brother.

Animals in Translation is a wonderfully factual, well-researched book that describes Temple's view of the world, and her theories surrounding animal's views as well. Because she is not an animal trainer by trade (but a very thoughtful observer) her views and theories described in this book are totally untainted by any previous animal training experience. Full of thought-provoking information that will cause you to look at your animal's behavior through new eyes! Hardcover 356 pages

This supremely well done movie paints a picture of a young woman's perseverance and determination while struggling with the isolating challenges of autism, at a time when it was still quite unknown. The film chronicles Temple's early diagnosis; her turbulent growth and development during her school years; the enduring support she received from her mother, aunt, her science teacher and her emergence as a woman with an innate sensitivity and understanding of animal behavior. This is an HBO film that has been nominated for 15 Emmy awards. 109 minutes, also includes special features - The Making of Temple Grandin with commentary by Dr Grandin.

I looked forward to seeing this for months - as soon as I heard it was coming out, actually. But I was worried that it might disappoint, as the book was so very good. This film met my expectations (hopes) and then some. The actors are brilliantly chosen - each perfect for the roles as I imagined them when reading. All the important events in the book are chronicled with incredible visual accuracy. There are heartbreaking moments, and humorous moments, and everything in between, but as the film progresses you will find your heart bursting with pride and admiration for Temple and those who supported her remarkable journey. Her contribution to society has been immeasurable.

Her candid account of how she believes that animals perceive their world is a very good one and it explains a lot about why horses act the way they do in certain situations. One of my favorite analogies she uses (in the book) is this: Imagine that you lived somewhere where you saw people frequently walking down the sidewalk. And one day, you stepped outside your door and saw people walking down the sidewalk.... on their hands. You'd probably freak out (I know I would). This is the type of situation that arises when a horse spooks at a perfectly familiar item - in a context that is unfamiliar. The book and movie are full of thought provoking theories like this - that can really help us understand, and empathize, with our animal friends when they do things that don't make sense.

The movie shows these moments as if you're looking through Temple's eyes. Which is really cool - because she was there during the making - to help them create the most accurate portrayal of her life. This one is a must-see for everyone.
