Mickey's story is proof that even the beautiful can be unwanted. She was a young, healthy dog - a spitting image of the faithful collie in our classic "Found" print, when she found her "forever" home with my mom and dad after being abandoned in a parking lot on a bitter cold January day.
Mom recounts the story;
"We got Mickey in January of 2001. She was living on the grocery store parking lot and it was about ten below zero. She came up to every car and smelled when the car door opened, looking for the person who dumped her, but would not let anyone touch her.
A carry out boy saw someone dump some dog food on the parking lot, push the dog out of their car, and drive off. I told the produce manager that I would take her if they could catch her.
When I got home from the grocery, the phone was ringing and I was told that the dog had been coaxed with some meat and they had caught her. A kind-hearted customer at the store offered to deliver her to my house which was about 10 miles away.
It took Mickey about 6 months to let my husband get close to her and she will still flinch when you pick up a stick or move fast, even after 7 years."

"Mickey - what a beautiful dog!"

Mickey is a sweet, charming dog. It boggles my mind to think that someone didn't love her, and makes me so sad to think that anyone ever hit her. Her only fault is that she likes to sleep in the flower beds. Mom adjusted the plantings appropriately, and Mickey finds her own spot in the multch, amid the big, sturdy shrubs that replaced the fragile flowers (they were a pain to take care of anyway).
She's sort of a godmother to all the cats on the farm, and it's not unusual to find several kitties cuddled up with her in her doghouse on cold days.

A typical "working girl", she keeps the yard and barns rid of freeloaders like 'possums, raccoons, and the like. And she's "environmentally responsible" as she brings home hunters' castoff deer parts and recycles them by eating them. (Yuck - that's the nicest way I could think of to say that.)
